Located south of the St. Lawrence River and north of the Appalachians, the Chaudière-Appalaches has a population of about 420,000 inhabitants. Lévis, the most densely populated city and the economic hub of the region, is connected to the Old Capital via the Québec and Pierre-Laporte Bridges, and via a ferry boat.

The outstanding architectural heritage of the Chaudière-Appalaches comprises about 15 churches listed as historic monuments along with five remarkable mills. Erected in 1799, the Moulin du domaine-de-Lotbinière, in Lotbinière, is an imposing stone watermill. The 'Beaumont Mill', named after the municipality where it was built in 1821, is a Canadian style structure sitting over a ravine.
